The muffler and catalytic converter tend to be one of those automotive systems that most people never think about. However, it pays to have those systems inspected every so often to make sure there are no exhaust system leaks that could lead to dangerous levels of carbon monoxide entering your passenger compartment.
Modern cars use much better materials in the exhaust system than older cars did, so if you have a car from prior to 2000, it might have an exhaust system that could be rusting and potentially leaking dangerous fumes. If you hear a louder exhaust noise or any other strange noises that could be an exhaust leak, make sure to come in and have us check your system.
Catalytic converters are another sort of forgotten part of the car, but if you have high mileage or poor engine performance the converter can start to get overworked which can really hurt your gas mileage and performance of your car. And in extreme cases, these can become very dangerous. In the photo above, this catalytic converter is glowing RED HOT which could lead to all sorts of problems, including catching the car or surroundings on fire. The customer only had a check engine light on with no drivability issues … yet. The customer had no idea of this danger under her car.
